What to wear for Maternity, Newborn & Family portraits.
One of the most common questions we get before any shoot is in regards to outfits. Families & expecting mothers most all want to make sure they’re following the latest trends while also wearing something that will stand the test of time. We’ve included an outfit outline below that we encourage you to consider before you go on a shopping spree. We will discuss accessories, jewelry and props for your portrait session and what to expect before, during and after your portrait session.
For Maternity sessions you ideally want to consider bringing 2 dresses, 1 knee high & 1 full length that are of solid colors. Stay away from anything with patterns. White, off white, black, pastels, earth tones & soft colors help create the best looking images. In most cases you don’t want anything too vibrant however there are clients that do want more of a bold look and will go with a red or dark purple dress and if that’s the look you’re going for then that’s perfectly okay. Shoes or heels are not needed during your Maternity photoshoot. A manicure a day or two beforehand is a great idea. Just be sure to go with clear or white and if you do go with a color just make sure it’s as soft as possible. Pink, Red or bold colors can be distracting. Strapless white, black & nude bras and pasties will come in handy if you have them. Hair down is preferred and remember to go soft on makeup but a little color is good! And in case you are wondering if we photoshop, the answer is Yes and we don’t charge extra for it. We will take care of scars & blemishes. We‘ll soften skin, remove marks, and just about anything under the sun but only if requested by you.
For Newborn sessions just bring your baby and a few diapers and we’ll take care of the rest. We have blankets, wraps, beanies, headbands, etc but if you have something specific in mind, such as a headpiece, then please don’t hesitate to bring them. We have baby wipes, heaters, positioning pillows so you really just need to get to our studio and once you make it in the door you’re all set and can finally start to relax.
For Family sessions you have 2 options when it comes to outfits. Casual or Formal. For a casual look you want to stick with earth tones, jeans, khaki pants and solid colors. You typically want to stay away from vibrant and bold colors like red and purple and also avoid patterns and branded clothing. Another option is formal family studio portraits where everyone is suited and dressed up. If you’ve chose this option just keep in mind to have your clothing items dry-cleaned about a week prior and bring a few jewelry options and even more than 1 pair of heels/dress shoes. You just never know what’s going to photograph better.
